Railway: deployment failing silently [2026 fix]
Silent Railway deployments usually stem from missing environment variables or broken health checks—add RAILWAy_ENVIRONMENT and verify your start script exists.
Railway: Deployment Failing Silently [2026 Fix]
TL;DR
Cause: Railway exits without logs because your app crashes before logging initializes, typically due to missingNODE_ENV, undefined database URLs, or a non-existent start script in package.json.Fix: Add explicit environment variables in Railway dashboard, verify your start script points to a valid entry file, and add early console logging before any imports.

Real Console Error Messages
These are the actual patterns you'll see (or won't see) when Railway fails silently:
``` Error: listen EADDRINUSE :::3000 at Server.setupListenHandle [as _listen2] (net.js:1058:16) ```
``` TypeError: Cannot read property 'DATABASE_URL' of undefined at Object.<anonymous> (/app/src/db.js:3:15) ```
``` error Command "node server.js" not found exit status 1 ```
``` FATAL ERROR: CALL_AND_RETRY_LAST Allocation failed - JavaScript heap out of memory 1: 0x10e23f0 node::Abort() [node] ```
``` Error: ENOENT: no such file or directory, open '/app/.env' at Object.openSync (fs.js:462:3) ```
Broken Code vs. Fix
Problem 1: Missing Environment Variable Access
Broken: ```javascript // server.js const express = require('express'); const app = express(); const dbUrl = process.env.DATABASE_URL; // undefined! const client = new DatabaseClient(dbUrl);
app.listen(3000, () => console.log('Running')); ```
Fixed: ```javascript // server.js console.log('[STARTUP] Environment check starting'); const express = require('express'); const app = express();
const requiredEnvs = ['DATABASE_URL', 'NODE_ENV'];
for (const env of requiredEnvs) {
if (!process.env[env]) {
console.error([FATAL] Missing required env: ${env});
process.exit(1);
}
}
const dbUrl = process.env.DATABASE_URL; const client = new DatabaseClient(dbUrl);
app.listen(process.env.PORT || 3000, () => { console.log('[SUCCESS] Server running on port', process.env.PORT || 3000); }); ```
Problem 2: Wrong Start Script in package.json
Broken: ```json { "name": "my-app", "scripts": { "dev": "nodemon server.js" } } ```
Fixed: ```json { "name": "my-app", "scripts": { "dev": "nodemon server.js", "start": "node server.js" } } ```
Problem 3: Synchronous File Read Before Error Handling
Broken: ```javascript const config = JSON.parse(fs.readFileSync('.env.json', 'utf8')); const app = express(); app.listen(3000); ```
Fixed: ```javascript const express = require('express'); const app = express();
let config; try { const fs = require('fs'); config = JSON.parse(fs.readFileSync('.env.json', 'utf8')); } catch (err) { console.error('[STARTUP_ERROR] Config file missing:', err.message); process.exit(1); }
app.listen(process.env.PORT || 3000, () => { console.log('[READY] App initialized'); }); ```
Railway-Specific Configuration
1. Set start command explicitly in Railway dashboard:
- Go to Settings → Build & Deploy
- Set "Start Command" to: node server.js (or your entry point)
2. Add all required variables via Environment tab:
- NODE_ENV=production
- DATABASE_URL=your_connection_string
- PORT=3000
3. Enable Railway logs in deployment: - View deployment logs in real-time via Railway dashboard - Check "Build Logs" AND "Deploy Logs" tabs separately
Note on version uncertainty: Railway's deployment behavior changed between 2024-2026 regarding health check timeouts. If your app initializes slowly (>30s), this may cause silent failures. Current Railway default is 60s, but we cannot guarantee this for all plan types.
Still Broken? Check These Too
1. Port binding conflict: Railway assigns PORT via environment—ensure your app reads process.env.PORT not hardcoded 3000. Check [environment variable guide](/?guide=env-variables).
2. Memory limit exceeded: Default Railway plan is 512MB. Node.js with production dependencies can exceed this. Add --max-old-space-size=400 to your start command: node --max-old-space-size=400 server.js
3. Missing Procfile or railway.json: Some runtimes require explicit build config. Create railway.json:
```json
{
"builder": "heroku.buildpacks",
"buildpacks": ["heroku/nodejs"]
}
```
See [deployment config guide](/?guide=railway-config).
Quick Debug Script
Add this temporary route to diagnose at startup:
```javascript app.get('/_health', (req, res) => { res.json({ status: 'ok', env: Object.keys(process.env).filter(k => !k.includes('SECRET')), uptime: process.uptime() }); }); ```
Then curl https://your-railway-app/_health after deploy.
